“Azadlig” bloc made a statement on recent repressions to peaceful protesters
Freedom of assembly of the Azerbaijani citizens that has been established in the Constitution of Azerbaijan is factually banned since 2005. The government rejects all the notification and permission letters from political parties, public associations to hold demonstration, picket and other kinds of public actions. Any public actions without the approval from the relevant governmental body are violently and cruelly dispersed by police force, security forces in civic uniform, protesters are subjected to violence and arrests.
In recent times Azadlig bloc appealed Baku City Mayoralty several times to hold a meeting with the aim of challenging the illegal ban on freedom of assembly and each time received unjustified rejection. At the same time, several international organizations, including OSCE made a statement and addressed the Azerbaijani government to immediately restore the freedom of assembly rights of the citizens. But, the authorities continued ignoring the international calls as well. read more
